Once upon a time, Panagora

“Producing quality products is great. But making them known to end consumers and distributing them to retail outlets is even better.”

This quote by Michel de Spéville, founder of Eclosia Group, marks the beginnings of Panagora’s journey towards the distribution of consumer food products.

After investing all his energy and resources in production at Food and Allied, Michel de Spéville became aware of the challenges involved in supplying food products across the island. It was following this observation that he went on to create Panagora on August 30, 1974. In ancient Greek, “pan” means “all” and “agora” means “the market”. The origins of the name reflected his ambition to distribute products to all corners of Mauritius.

Originally dedicated to the marketing and distribution of chickens, it wasn’t long before the subsidiary experienced remarkable growth. From its very first year of existence, it was already supplying retailers with imported food products. In four years, it grew from six to 55 employees. Its six distribution vehicles supplied 91 different products, representing 3,000 tonnes of merchandise, around the island.
A visionary and a realist

While Panagora was growing alongside other subsidiaries of the Group, it also gradually began taking over the distribution of other brands. The company evolved in parallel with Mauritius’ rapid expansion. After beginning with basic necessities, it extended its range to fresh food products, among which featured Yoplait yogurt, as early as the 1980s.

The subsidiary also developed brands with strong identities. In 2004, it launched Royal Choice, a label producing both meat and seafood products. In the 2010s, Panagora veered towards healthy products. Down to Earth was created to make organic products accessible to Mauritian families.

Fast forward forty years from its creation, and Panagora has multiplied its employees a hundredfold, manages a fleet of over 60 trucks, operates four warehouses and has a strong presence in Madagascar and Seychelles. Today, the company supplies consumer food products to 4,500 clients and its portfolio includes 40 Mauritian brands and 20 global icons.

Its relentless pursuit of innovation has driven it to become a key player in food distribution in the Indian Ocean.
